“REMARKS BY
THE RT. HON. PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA
AT THE GREEN WORLD INTERNATIONAL UGANDA LIMITED ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY
MESTIL HOTEL KAMPALA
25 NOVEMBER 2023
1.I bring you greetings from H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the President of the Republic of Uganda. I thank you for inviting me to participate in this important ceremony of awarding Ugandans who have been distributing Nutri-Plant Organic Plus Fertilizers that you manufacture.
2.I congratulate all the Nutri-Plant Organic Plus Fertilizers distributors that you are going to reward today. I thank you for the job well done. I also want to thank Green World International Uganda Limited for rewarding your distributors. Rewards like these do not only motivate employees but also facilitate the growth of businesses. With initiatives like this, the future of your business is bright.
3.In a special way, I want to thank Green World International Uganda Limited for participating in our ongoing nationwide Farmer Mobilisation, Education, Value-Addition and Service Delivery campaign. We started this campaign in Greater Mubende in August this year to link agro-input dealers like you with the farmers. We also wanted you to use this campaign to take your services closer to the people.
4.We have so far covered 17 districts - Greater Mubende (Mubende, Mityana, Kasanda, Kiboga and Kyankwanzi), Greater Luwero (Luwero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola), Kibaale (Kibaale, Kagadi and Kakumiro), Greater Masaka (Bukomansimbi, Kalungu and Sembabule) and Greater Mpigi (Gomba, Butambala and Mpigi).
5.Ladies and Gentlemen, agriculture is the backbone of our country. This sector employs over 60% of Ugandans and accounts for 24% of the Gross Domestic Product and over 35% of the exports. The agricultural sector is identified in our National Development Plan III and Vision 2040 as a key pillar for reducing poverty and driving socio-economic transformation. So, agriculture is a very important industry, and you are investing in the right sector at the right time.
6.However, the agricultural sector faces numerous challenges such as low productivity due to declining soil fertility. Yet majority of the people who are engaged in agriculture do not use fertilizers due to, among others, the high cost of fertilizers. It is estimated that we lose 80kg of nutrients per hectare each year but add only between 1-1.5kg through fertilizer application. At this rate, Uganda's fertilizer application is one of the lowest in the world.
7.In 2016, the Government put in place the National Fertilizer Policy to guide and promote the proper application of fertilizers. I urge you and all Ugandans to take advantage of the existing legal framework to promote the application of fertilizers to increase agricultural production, productivity, and profitability.
8.I am happy to learn that Green World International Uganda Limited is considering setting up a fertilizer production plant in Uganda. This is welcome news. Let me take this opportunity to inform you that there are many investment opportunities in agriculture in our country such as value addition on coffee and tea, among others.
9.As the Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, I want to assure you of the Government's commitment to maintaining the existing conducive environment for your businesses to thrive. You are very welcome to invest in Uganda.
10.With those words, I want to congratulate the winners and thank you for inviting me once again.
For God and My Country
Nabbanja Robinah PRIME MINISTER”
